FBC Gallatin,
I want to talk to you about what matters most this year for Christmas! And I don’t just want to talk to you; I want to prepare sermons to preach to you about what matters most. And I don’t just want to talk and preach about what matters most in a shallow and manufactured way that we might be used to during this season, but I want to take us deeper into the things of what matters most.
And it’s for that reason that we will be starting a new 3-part series about what matters most during this season, and it’s not sentimentality and cliché talking points at all. So many say, “Jesus is the reason for the season” and they are right, however, we have to go further and ask the question about who Jesus is to begin with. And to that end we will dive deeply all month long into this question of the deep things of God’s word to ensure that we all have a Very Merry Christological Christmas this year by actually thinking deeply about the person of Jesus who is the divine Son who added unto himself flesh to become a human being like us in the incarnation (try putting that on that on a Hallmark card)!
The series will start the first Sunday of December not at the birth in Bethlehem, but before that in eternity past to see the Pre-Existent Divine Son prior to the birth that we of course spend so much time thinking about during this month. We will then make our way to the birth of Christ to take a deep dive in the mind-blowing intricacies and deeply brain stretching realities of the incarnation where the divine Son took on flesh and dwelt among us. Lastly, we will look at examples of Jesus’ life and ministry all the way to his death and resurrection to see that this glorious Jesus Christ who we love and worship was not just a human being alone, but that he was both human and divine and seeing and applying truths about his unique nature and work makes all the difference in the world in our knowing him rightly.
So, in conclusion, I don’t only want you to “have yourself a merry little Christmas” as Frank Sinatra’s classic song says, and I don’t just want you to only “let your heart delight…” But I want us all to have ourselves a Very Merry (not so little, but huge) Christological Christmas as we put on our scuba gear and dive deep down into the depths of the person and work of Christ! And I pray that as we grow in our theological understanding of Christology (which is just one of the systematic theology topics of Christian doctrine), that it would cause us to love and wonder and rejoice with great joy about what truly matters most this Christmas!
Sincerely,
Pastor Daniel Pelichowski
